Young Explorers - Reach for the Stars
Schoolhouse Rec!
with Young Explorers Club
Issaquah Parks & Community Services and Young Explorers Club are collaborating to offer Schoolhouse Rec!, an engaging, project-based before and after school program at the Issaquah Community Center. Our program adopts a holistic approach to learning, offering a diverse range of enrichment classes including creative arts, STEM lab, team sports, and academic tutoring. Additionally, we introduce students to philanthropy, fostering a sense of community service. By blending academic support, STEAM education, and social-emotional learning, our program aims to empower Young Explorers to build a solid academic foundation, cultivate a passion for STEAM exploration, and develop problem-solving and social skills for their future success.
We believe that creativity and problem-solving skills are essential life skills that can be developed. Our students engage in a variety of hands-on activities and special events, including holiday celebrations, field trips, guest speaker presentations, community service projects, and class performances, thoroughly enjoying the experiments and projects they undertake. We strive to cultivate an inventor’s lab where children can explore the world around them, experiment with different materials, express themselves, collaborate with peers, share their discoveries, and dream big dreams!

Monday - Creative Arts
Partnering with local art organizations, we provide a diverse array of courses including visual art, drama, music, and digital media. Our curriculum also includes an exploration of art history and exposure to various artists from around the world. We aim to ignite the curiosity of elementary students, allowing them to delve into the world of art, grasp the essence of creativity, and build fundamental techniques. Through the art-making process and experiences, we strive to help young learners gain self-confidence, develop creative and innovative skills, and use the arts to inspire a love of learning.
Tuesday - STEM Lab
Our STEM Lab classes for elementary students encompass a broad range of topics, including science experiments, technology & digital media, robotics & engineering, as well as coding & computer science. Through hands-on experiences, we offer valuable learning opportunities for young learners to develop original designs, create real-world products, build strong creative and problem-solving skills, and discover innovative ways of thinking and exploring.
Wednesday - Wild Wednesdays
We offer excellent opportunities for young learners to engage in group projects. Students select their project topic from several options, collaboratively develop an idea, create a plan, and bring it to fruition. They learn to design, plan, develop, and present their projects as a group to the class. While teachers provide guidance as needed, this project-based learning approach allows students to take complete ownership of their projects from start to finish. This process teaches them to set goals, monitor progress, make necessary adjustments, and reflect on their learning, all while building their teamwork skills.
Additionally, we host various special events on Wednesday afternoons, including guest speaker presentations, team-building games, holiday celebrations, community service projects, class performances, and field trips to locations such as the Issaquah library, food bank, Julius Boehm pool, and more!
Thursday - Team Building Thursdays
Our Team Building Thursdays focus on activities designed to foster collaboration and teamwork among students. These activities include team sports such as soccer and basketball, where students learn to strategize and work together to achieve a common goal. Additionally, team-building games like relay races and tug-of-war are incorporated to encourage camaraderie, communication, and mutual support. Furthermore, team STEM challenges are introduced, requiring students to cooperate and leverage each other’s strengths to solve complex problems. Overall, our Team Building Thursdays aim to create an engaging and supportive environment where students can develop essential social skills, build strong relationships, and experience the value of working effectively as a team.
Friday - Kid’s Choice Fridays
During Kid’s Choice days, our students have the opportunity to take charge and decide on the activities for the day. Unlike our regular lesson plans, which are created by our teachers, Kid’s Choice activities are planned based on suggestions from the students themselves.
Additionally, for those students who require academic assistance, we offer academic tutoring sessions. These sessions are designed to help elementary students understand concepts they learn at school, practice problems, become familiar with test formats and structures, and establish a solid academic foundation and study habits through academic monitoring and personalized tutoring.
